Chicago, Illinois - Mondelez International's 2024 State of Snacking study, surveyed by The Harris Poll, reveals a significant increase in snacking frequency worldwide.
The 2024 State of Snacking report surveyed 3,785 adults across 13 countries, finding that 91% of respondents snack at least once a day, with 63% indulging in two snacks and 31% in three or more daily.
The report highlights a growing preference for snacks over traditional meals, with 58% of participants expressing more anticipation for their daily snacks than meals.
The trend towards snacking is even more pronounced among younger demographics like Gen Z and millennials, who snack more frequently compared to older generations and prefer multiple small meals throughout the day.
The afternoon remains the most popular time for a snack, showing an increase from the previous year, while evening snacking also saw a rise.
Most of those surveyed turn to snacks for an energy boost, with North America and Asia-Pacific showing the highest agreement on this benefit.
When it comes to snack selection, biscuits/cookies and chocolate are the top choices globally.
Mondelez’s study highlighted that biscuits/cookies are consumed weekly or more by 66% of adults, with notable consumption in the Philippines, India, and Brazil leading the pack.
73% of global consumers can’t imagine a world without it, with the highest affection for chocolate found in the US and UK.
Shopping habits for snacks are diversifying with significant shifts to online purchases. While 75% of snacks are still bought in-store, a notable 25% are now purchased online, a trend expected to grow.
The current economic climate influences snack-buying behaviors, prompting consumers to seek out sales, use coupons, buy in bulk, or opt for lower-priced alternatives.
This shift reflects a broader trend of adapting purchasing habits to maximize value while continuing to indulge in favorite snacks.
