Flowers Foods Adapts to Evolving Bread Preferences

Thomasville, Georgia - Flowers Foods Inc. has shown resilience and adaptability, according to A. Ryals McMullian, the company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Despite a slight dip in sales figures, the company is poised to meet new consumer demands head-on.

While Flowers Foods experienced a 1.6% decline in dollar sales of fresh packaged bread in the fourth quarter, the overall yearly increase was 1.3%, as reported by Circana retail data.

This dip in the last quarter, traditionally weak for sandwich bread due to seasonal variations, also saw a modest decrease in unit sales by 1.3%. However, promotional pricing and SKU rationalization played roles in these figures.

Flowers Foods' major brands such as Dave’s Killer Bread, Wonder, and Canyon Bakehouse each marked gains in market share and saw significant growth in tracked channel volumes.

Particularly notable was the 17.8% increase for Canyon Bakehouse. This indicates a strong consumer response to diversified and health-focused bread options.

The Nature’s Own brand illustrates a nuanced view of the market. While its traditional loaf bread saw a decrease in volume, the Nature’s Own Perfectly Crafted premium line experienced an 8.5% rise in unit sales.

This shift reflects broader consumer trends towards healthier and premium products, a sentiment echoed by McMullian's reference to the impact of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs and the Make America Healthy Again movement on bread consumption.

Flowers Foods is responding to these market dynamics by focusing on no artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors in its products and strategically acquiring brands that resonate with today’s health-conscious consumer.
