French Seeks Heritage Status for Traditional Baguettes

  • 22 January 2018

The President of France’s National Confederation of Baking and Pastry will be meeting with the France’s President Emmanuel Macron to throw his presidential weight for the United Nations to recognize the France’s beloved baguette as a “cultural treasure”. French bakers want the crusty, thin loaves to be protected as a world treasure by UNESCO.

The traditional French baguette is baked using only four ingredients which includes; flour, yeast, salt and water.

The National Confederation of Baking and Pastry president Dominique Anract said, “When I see the quality of bread in supermarkets, it is impossible not to be indignant. The bread is frozen, it comes from who knows where, nothing is done according to the rules of the art [of breadmaking].”

Mr. Macron told the French radio Europe 1 Friday, “The baguette is envied in the entire world. I know our bakers; they saw that the Neapolitans managed to have pizza as part of world heritage.”

As stated by Mr. Anract there are currently 33,000 artisan bakeries who serve bread all over France and have employed over 180,000 people.

French bakers see the World Heritage status as a way to improve the quality of the bread throughout the country as they are fearful of the poor quality of bread.

It will certainly take some time before French baguettes joins Neapolitan pizza-making on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Naples launched its bid in 2009 before making it to the list in 2017.
