2018 Wedding Cake Trend

  • 22 January 2018

New wedding dessert trends are emerging and we are seeing semi frosted cakes with edges that exposes layers of delicious flavors inside. More and more brides are opting to go for ‘semi frosted naked cakes’ that has a whisper of silky smooth buttercream spread so thin that it reveals tempting peeks of the golden cake beneath of buttercream so that the texture of the cake and the colors inside are displayed. The semi naked cake is all about the golden edge of the cake that is peeking through its frosting.

Chef, founder and owner of Milk Bar, Christina Tosi has been credited of starting the trend that forgo the traditional outer layer of icing.
For seasonal decoration, the cake can also be decorated by fresh fruit, sugar flowers don’t pop as much on naked cake as rich and colorful fresh fruit do.
These styles of cakes can also incorporate edible decorations such as macarons, meringues or truffles. The semi naked cakes are perfect for weddings that have a beachy, rustic or quirky theme as their look is less formal than the traditional fondant styles. While the cakes themselves may have a rustic appeal to them, they tend to have more refined and elegant decorations such as gold leaf, personalized toppers, larger roses and macaroons.

The way to get the look for these cakes right is by focusing on simplicity. The decorative elements are usually concentrated on one side of the cake and kept to a minimum too.
